Before Making Box Braids (Prep like a Pro)

  • Start with a clean scalp

Wash your hair 1–2 days before braiding. Dirty hair = itchy scalp + buildup trapped under braids. Not cute!.

  • Deep condition (don’t skip this!)

Braids are a protective style, but only if your hair is moisturized beforehand. Dry hair under braids = breakage waiting to happen.

  • Detangle thoroughly

Detangle section by section. This makes braiding smoother and prevents unnecessary tension at the roots.

  • Trim if necessary

If your ends are thin, split, or see-through trim them. Braiding damaged ends just locks in damage.

  • Stretch your hair (optional but helpful)

Blow-dry on low heat or band your hair. It reduces tension and makes the braids neater.

  • Oil your scalp lightly

A little oil goes a long way. Heavy oils before braiding can cause buildup later.

After Making Box Braids (Keep Them Fresh and Healthy)

  • Don’t style tightly on Day 1

Your scalp needs to relax. Avoid high ponytails or buns for the first few days.

  • Moisturize your scalp regularly

Use a light oil or braid spray 2–3 times a week. Dry scalp = itching + flakes.

  • Clean your scalp (yes, you should!)

Wash every 2–3 weeks using diluted shampoo or a scalp cleanser. Focus on the scalp, not the length.

  • Protect at night

Sleep with a silk or satin scarf/bonnet. Cotton pillows steal moisture like a thief in the night.

  • Don’t keep them in forever

6–8 weeks max. Keeping braids too long can cause thinning edges and breakage.

  • Listen to your scalp

Pain, bumps, or excessive itching = something’s wrong. Braids should never hurt long-term.

You Welcome!💖💕
